Bench
University of Oregon
A bench -- but also a sculpture, a passageway, a place to sit, and a place to find shelter. This design was done in collaboration with two other classmates, and was an exercise in creating dynamic spaces.
Our goal was to design a structure that is delicate and permeable, but still reads as a clearly defined space. Our solution was to combine a series of vertical wood slats with a curving form. The perceived level of enclosure changes as one moves through and around the object. The structure looks different from every angle it is viewed, seemingly moving as the viewer moves.
This sculpture was also an exercise in color and light. A warm yellow hue was applied to the underside of the protruding fins, so that the color would bounce off of the white surface and appear to radiate light.
